The INCLUD-ED project has made an impact once again, this time at the European Conference entitled: Educating Europe – Educational Sciences go FP7 and beyond. Funding opportunities, matchmaking, networking.

Ramon Flecha, the main researcher and coordinator of the European INCLUD-ED.Strategies for inclusion and social cohesion from education in Europe project, and a Full Professor in Sociology in the University of Barcelona, was invited to participate in a European Conference entitled: Educating Europe – Educational Sciences go FP7 and beyond. Funding opportunities, matchmaking, networking (30th June – 1st July 2010, Brussels, University Foundation Club). This Conference was organised by the European Commission, along with the German National Contact Point for Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities, the PT-DLR (SSH NCP), the International Cooperation in Education of the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) and NET4SOCIETY.

The objective of this Conference was to promote educational research within the “Socio-economic sciences and humanities” priority area as part of the specific “Cooperation” programme, within the VII European Union Framework Programme (7PM). The priority was to go more in-depth into the “Indicative Research Roadmap” set out by the European Commission, and to gather the international scientific community together in order to promote cooperative research in the field of educational science.  Ramon Flecha was invited within this context, and participated as one of the main speakers in the session entitled “EU funded educational projects”. Ramon presented the results of the project, and the impact it is having at a political level, as well as its impact on the media internationally.

Public Seminar Social Cohesion: Schools and Their Communities, University of Nottingham. February 2009

At the Nottingham University on the 13rd of February, 2009 it has been celebrate a public seminar called Social Cohesion: Schools and Their Communities. It was presented the scientific results of the Project 6 from the Integrated Project Includ-ed.

At the beginning Marta Soler (director of CREA-UB and coordinator of the Knowledge Management Committee) expose an overview of the project explaining the theoretical base, the structure and the development of Includ-ed Project. Then it was proposed a round table to explain and debate the different types of community participation and improvements in educational success and social cohesion. Suzzane Gatt (Project 6 Leader) from the University of Malta (Malta) was the person to lead this round table. Teresa Sordé (Integrated Project Leader) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) exposed the topic of family and community education; Vaiva Zuzeviciuté from the Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania) explained the community participation in school decision-making processes; Katriina Kaalikoski and Mikko Ojala from the University of Helsinki (Finland) spoke about participation in the development of curriculum and evaluation; and finally, Laura Engel and John Holford from the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) analyzed participation in classrooms and learning spaces.

The Includ-ed project in the European Commission and the European Parliament in Barcelona (27-28 October)

The Includ-ed Public Presentation was held on the 28th of October in the Representation Office of the European Commission and the European Parliament in Barcelona.

Most of the partners from the Includ-ed project attended the Consortium Meeting and the Includ-ed Public Presentation, with the exception of the partners from Cyprus and Austria. In the Opening Remarks for this event, several speeches were given by: the Director of the Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona, the Research Programme Officer (Unit 4 Scientific culture and gender issues) from the European Commission and the main researcher of the Includ-ed project. In addition, three different sessions were held: a round table on the educational strategies that overcome social exclusion and promote educational success, a session on the political impact of the Includ-ed results and a round table on our research results on community participation for educational success.

In terms of the audience, various people from several associations (i.e. immigrant associations) also attended this presentation. Also teachers from primary, secondary and high schools were there, as well as university students and researches. A total of 75 people attended the Includ-ed Public Presentation.

EU Cluster on Education and Social Inclusion

On the 8th, 9th and 10th of October 2008 representatives of all the Ministries of Education from different countries in the European Union visited successful schools in the Basque Country which are implementing the Learning Communities project. These schools work based on the successful educational strategies analysed within the Includ-ed project. These representatives highlighted the importance of extending educational projects such as this one.

XVI Cultural Conferences of the Federation of Roma Associations in Catalonia (FAGIC)

Ramon Flecha (the main researcher) and Elena Duque (the project manager) in the Includ-ed project participated in the  XVI Cultural Conferences of the Federation of Roma Associations in Catalonia (FAGIC).

Both conferences presented the Includ-ed project, the first one was more focused on analysing inclusive education and the second one presented the main Includ-ed results. Special emphasis was placed on the results of Project 2: effective educational practices. It is important to mention that both researchers were invited by Julio Vargas, the FAGIC vice-president and member of the Panel of Experts Committee.
