ALLINTERACT. Widening and diversifying citizen engagement in science (H2020)

June 25th, 2020

Last March, the ALLINTERACT H2020 project (SwafS-20-2018-2019: Building the SwafS knowledge base) was accepted for funding. It will start on October 2020 and will finished on May 2023. The project builds on the idea that outcomes of scientific developments are present in people’s everyday lives. However, even if they appreciate these, many individuals feel disconnected from science, and do not believe they should participate in it or try to understand it. Nevertheless, research has show that when people become aware of the social impacts generated by research, they are more likely to participate in science. Drawing on this, ALLINTERACT follows a twofold aim: to create new knowledge on how to transform potential citizen participation in science into actual engagement, and to unveil new ways to engage societal actors in science, including those who have traditionally been excluded from, like young citizens and vulnerable groups.

The project will be developed by focusing on two Sustainable Development Goals –Quality Education and Gender Equality. Under the communicative methodology (Gómez et al., 2019), It will also adopt a mixed method approach, including Social Impact in Social Media Analysis (Pulido et al., 2018), a European survey, an intervention study and communicative focus groups. The project will shed new light on how citizens interact with science, by focusing on those actions that contribute to the transformation of potential citizen engagement into actual citizen engagement. The aim is to foster the cooperation between science and society, including that of young citizens and vulnerable groups, through raising the awareness of the social impact of research.

The ALLINTERACT’s project proposal has been developed by an interdisciplinary consortium led by Prof. Flecha (CREA-University of Barcelona), and integrated by Prof. Kumpulainen (University of Helsinki), Prof. Avraamidou (University of Groningen), Prof. Leccardi (University of Milano-Bicocca), Prof. Torres (ISCSP – University Of Lisbon), Prof. Ovseiko (Oxford University), and Prof. Petuya, president of the European Parents Association (EPA). It will also count on the support of the Natura Insititute, the Yes Forum and the Welfare Department of the Catalan Administration.
